Final Project Design: Simulated Selves
In Conversation
To complement our more sculptural design, and highlight some of the generative AI tools available, we decided to expand the work into an installation context. The decision was also practical, as we needed to consider how we could protect the screens and sculptures from Queensland weather conditions and ensure screen visibility.
We opted for use of an open shipping container that could be configured to include the sculptures, as well as other sound and visual elements that hinted at the gradual erasure of boundaries between real and AI visualisations, alongside a demonstration of the current capabilities (and limitations) of AI tools.
The different elements we decided to include are:
AI image gallery of AI generated images
Virtual windows of AI generated video scenes
AI generated background sound
AI video fishtank
We also added a selection of real and faux plants and seating to enable participants to get out of the sun or rain and listen to the conversation.
Overall the final design aimed evoke the feeling of a waiting room, signalling this current moment where we are exploring some of the new AI tools, but waiting for the future applications and implications to emerge.
